Second Teaching Practicum

Today, Tuesday 25th, 2017, I had my second teaching practicum. The topic was the present perfect tense again, but as my mentor suggested me I developed a reading activity.

For the warm up activity, I divided students in two groups and I asked them to make two lines. Well, the idea for this activity was that I said a verb and students had to pass a marker to the last student and she/he had to write a sentence in present perfect using the verb. I consider that this activity was good because students were competing among them and that increased their interest in the activity.

Then, I developed the reading activity and I started with the pre-reading in which I asked students to work in pairs and discuss some questions. After that, I asked them to share their thoughts. Finally, I pasted some pictures about “google” and according to those pictures I asked students to predict about the reading.
For the during activity, I asked students to work in trios and read the article about “google”. Then I had them doing two execises to assess their comprehension about the article.

Finally, for the post reading, students discussed some questions about the use of “google”. I think that this activity allowed students to speak, interact and also benefits those kinesthetic  students as they were moving around the classroom. Moreover, this activity allowed me to interact with students and know about their opinions.

For the last activity, I asked students to write 3 sentences using the present perfect. Then, I had them sharing with their classmates. The only bad aspect was that I did not have time to check students’ sentences, so as my mentor advised me I need to consider the time for my activities so that I can reach my objective very well.

First Teaching Practicum

During this first period, I will be teaching to intermediate English students from the afternoon shift. I had my first class today July 19th, 2017 and I taught them about the present perfect.

I started my class with the warm up activity in which I had students walking around the classroom and asking diferent questions with “Have you ever…?” I think that this activity was good because students were interacting and speaking since the beginning of the class.

For the controlled practice, I had students working in pairs. Moreover, I used vocabulary about touristic places as the teacher suggested me. This activity allowed students to feel more confident with the use of the present perfect and they learned new vocabulary.

Then, I had students developing the semi-controlled activity in which they were discussing some questions such as how many times have you traveled?, what is the most interesting city/place that you have visited in your country?, among others. During the activity, I could notice that students were really engaged, and they were using the present perfect tense.

For my last activity, I had students developing a gallery walk about touristic places of El Salvador. Besides, some students shared some experiences with me and I liked that because it showed me that they felt comfortable with me and with the activity. However, my mentor told me that I have to be careful with the objective, so I need to improved that aspect for my next class.
